A belated post about my final day in Germany

Having spent Tuesday night in hospital with one of my charges I was released, bleary eyed, for a couple of hours on Wednesday morning to join the others on a visit to the local fire station, which, incidentally is completely manned by volunteers. We had great fun and were allowed to try on fireproof suits, fire fighter's garb and play with the hoses. Then I had to go back to the hospital for the past part of the afternoon zzzzzzzzzzzz. Still, I learned a few new medical words and had a really good chat with some Turkish people about what it was like to live in Germany. All excellent practice for my language skills.

Both sets of pupils and their teachers spent the afternoon preparing for the goodbye meal that evening. They even made the flages in the picture above, which shows the headmaster of our partner school giving his goodbye speech. Some of the parents were telling me how much they liked Tom and how he had spoken really well in German with them and had even been singing with one of the mums. Then finally, we got to catch up with some old friends; Fritz, the father of the exchange, who although he has long since retired, is sure to make an appearance on one of our trips every time we visit and whom all our kids love and hail as a "legend", and also my former h.o.d. and Sue's former teacher Margaret, who was there for a retirement do on her way to holidays in Spain.

It was a lovely last evening. I love Germany x
