Not so pretty

Some seaside towns just aren't very pretty and this one in North Wales is one of them. Still it was a welcome change from school and the norm to accompany a Geography trip to Rhyl today. The weather was glorious and the company was fun. It's so sad that we are so bound by health and safety restrictions these days, the poor children weren't allowed to go anywhere near the sea, never mind dip their toes in because the LEA won't allow it.

When we were kids you used to come home from school, disappear off out, come back for tea and then dash off out again until dark. I even remember being locked in the local park at night and having to climb out because we had stayed too late. I also remember cycling through Salford alone in the dark. I'd freak at the very thought of my children doing that now. I know there is a lot of sense in protecting children in many ways, but I do think we are breeding a generation wrapped in cotton wool and I'm just as guilty of that as the next person. We are already beginning to reap what we have sown and I see trainees coming through now who need and expect a lot more support. But that's a whole different tale to tell and I have to go and pack for my departure to Germany on Wednesday morning, at the unearthly hour of 3.15a.m.!!!

Little rays of sunshine

Just in case you thought I'd fallen off the edge of the planet, here's a quick blog to tell you that I haven't. I'm just submerged in reports, 6 classes to do at once. Boo hoo! I'm trying to juggle these with a busy week full of things I want to do such as music meeting and book club. Today I was rescued from work by a visit from my sil Ally and her scrumptious boys. I'm amazed by how much the twins Max and Charlie and talking now. Charlie was able to name every family member on a photograph. Quite a feat for a two year old when he has so many relatives to remember! They tucked into a picnic of beans in the garden.

And huggable Harry, who is as good as gold, just sat there smiling while his big brothers did some tumbling and wrestling on the trampoline. Love those boys. They and the sunshine really cheered me up today.

Ta dah!

I keep noticing our concrete shed as something of an eyesore in the background of photographs taken in our garden. It's almost two years since we had it built and we've been meaning to paint it since then. Well last night Peter, Tom and Anni had been to see Oasis in Cardiff. I had a ticket too but couldn't go because of a major inconvenience known as work. In actual fact, I was so exhausted that I felt sick, so I spent the evening on the sofa huddled in what has lovingly become known as Annabel's granny blanket (because she's always wrapped up in it like a little old lady on the sofa). So today, feeling a little refreshed, I decided it was time to get active. Hence I set about painting the shed. Ta dah! Know the bottom of the garden has something of a mediterranean feel about it.

We celebrated with a barbecue (just the two of us). I think Peter was rather pleased with my efforts. He thought he was going to end up doing it.

The round off a lovely day nicely, Julie came over with Slumdog Millionaire and we really enjoyed watching it.

Je suis fatiguée!

My get up and go has got up and gone. I think I have post inspection fatigue. I could quite happily be in my bed right now and it is only just past 8pm. I have to muster the energy to plan some lessons for tomorrow...
Just thought I'd share some things that have made me chuckle this week.
1) My nephew Joe is currently in Japan and will soon be moving on to Thailand. Mum had been speaking to my brother and said, "Isn't it great that Joe got to climb Millycanjiro?" Funnier still, I think what she means is that he got to see Mount Fuji.
2) Mum came to tea yesterday and with her in the car on the way to town Tom asked (as usual), "What's for tea Mum?"
Don't know yet.
"Can we have nachos and fajitas?"
I don't think Nana is a nachos and fajitas girl, Tom.
"Oh I don't mind," Mum pipes up, "Let him listen to what he wants."
3) Tom has a Physics exam tomorrow. Annabel asked, "Which one's Physics Tom?"
4) Teaching the same year 9 class who marvelled at me being married for nearly 20 years and not being sick of him, I was asked,
"Are you French Miss?"
No.
"Are you half French then?"
No.
"Are you a quarter French?
No.
"Well are you an eighth French?"
No, I'm not at all French, but I'm very impressed with your Maths.
"Not at all French!"
What makes you think I'm French?
"Well when you speak French it's all blabbedy blabbedy blah blah."
There was a pause.
"Not at all French? Well I am surprised at that!"
Honestly, do I sound remotely French? I'm from Salford!

Celebrating with friends by surprise

This evening we went out to Tom's favourite restaurant to celebrate his 16th birthday, since on his actual birthday I'd been in the middle of inspection frenzy and he'd been in the middle of exams. And what are the chances of this? We walked into the restaurant only to find our friends Dave, Debbie, Becki, Abi and John also about to sit down for a meal there! So we got them to put our two tables together. (Which actually seemed to be a very difficult request for the staff to comprehend for a while.)

And we had a most pleasant evening, even if my daughter did seem to have composed her outfit completely out of my wardrobe! In fact we were having such fun, we forgot to sing happy birthday to Tom and he was too busy enjoying himself to notice!

Sweet sixteen

Tom was so tiny when he was born at 7.39pm 16 years ago today. He was 18 days early. If he'd hung on, he wouldn't have found himself sitting a History GCSE on his 16th birthday.

Peter is away until tonight, Tom's in the middle of GCSEs and I'm in the middle of an inspection, so we're going to celebrate properly at the weekend. But for today we had John over to tea and had some Purple Ronnie birthday cake.

One of the many things I love about my not so tiny son is his ability to make us all laugh, sometimes it only takes an expression on his face. Happy birthday Tom, we love you loads xxx

Not fair :(

So the sun is shining, my pupils are melting and so am I. The last thing on earth they are is "engaged" with the idea of learning a foreign language in a hot classroom, especially when they've just ahd a week off. My baby boy is 16 tomorrow and I want to celebrate with him. And guess what happens? The nasty O people announce that they are coming to inspect my school and will be all over us like a rash for the next two days. Great! Just what I need and with only a day and a half's notice. I was awake at 5.30am today and have just finished work now.
