It had been 3 years since we last had a holiday in the sun, partly because of Peter's back operation and not knowing when it was going to happen and partly because we are absolutely useless at booking things in advance. We're always limited by Peter's busy selling periods too. So it was pretty amazing when we managed to book an apartment in Split, Croatia for 10 days, which just so happened to be available between the dates on which easyjet had the best flight prices. Two Sundays ago, we tootled off to stay with Paul (my brother) and Ann just near Brighton where our holiday began with a lovely evening and a fabulous roast dinner. I was rather nervous as I had organised everything separately, from the train to Gatwick, the flights, the apartment and it had all been so easy, I was convinced something would go wrong. Nothing did. We arrived to beautiful blue skies and HEAT! We immediately found a bus which stopped a short walk from our apartment and the place was perfect. Most evenings we took a walk along Split Riva.
It was beautiful and buzzing with life. To our amusement we even discovered a Top Shop (the arched window to the right of this church). Every evening there was live music here, there and everywhere, such as on this stage in the middle of the riva. Even I would have to admit that their music genre is rooted somewhere between the distant past and dreadful; but live music is live music. I was highly amused to hear two different bands in two different locations belting out "Take Me Home Country Roads" with great gusto on our first night.
We even heard "I Just Called To Say I Love You" from just below our apartment that first night. The riva has a spot with a few marble thrones which I liked to sit on and enjoy the music for as long as I could before the kids dragged us away. Sometimes my stay was lengthened while Tom indulged in his fascination for the random nutcracking table opposite my favourite seat. It was nice that Tom and Anni could sit and read or chat online in the apartment when the music became too much for them, while Peter and I enjoyed sitting and being entertained just a few feet away in the square below.
