Our apartment was in within Diocletian's Palace, which was built at the turn of the fourth century. Above was the view from our lounge window. It was an excellent spot from which you could watch the world go by and listen to the music in the square, or easily shut it out if you wanted to.
This was the the tower of the cathedral of St Dominus, which Tom and I climbed to the top of one day. (No homage paid to health and safety there with its rickety stairs, not always fully attached to the wall and no protection from a fall!) At the foot of the tower there was a wide range of entertainment to watch, from ballroom dancing to belly dancing to fire eating.
On 4 nights there was a massive Roman pageant called The Days of Diocletian which was quite spectacular, although I was confused on one evening when a pirate ship came into the marina, blasting guns and flashing red smoke, before the pirates joined the stage with one of the Roman emperors. I am sure it would have made more sense if I could have understood Croatian.
