Breaking and mending things

Yesterday evening we were sitting under the pergola by candlelight with lovely friends when one of them asked if the bench he and Peter were sitting on was likely to break because it really felt as if it was going to go and he wouldn't want to break it. Peter assured him that it was fine, the arm on the bench had been dodgy for ages. (Needless to say I had "left it to Pete" to be fixed.) When suddenly and dramatically there was a crack and the pair of them toppled to the ground complete with broken bench. If only I'd been filming! It was too funny.
It's funny how there is, in this house at least, a tendency to put up with things that don't work properly. Our dishwasher, which we've used for 7 years and was in the house at least 5 years before that, has not done a proper job for years. The spinning arm falls apart and melts on the metal base of the machine. So for a long time it hasn't actually spun. With it's last fall it melted beyond repair. I went online, found the local parts and service centre and within a day we had a brand new spinning arm and the dishwasher works!!! Woohoo! Why did we put up with it for so long?
Today my vacuum cleaner (which has also never worked properly) is going back to the manufacturers. It's a week of breaking and mending things.
