As has become our custom every September, we were back in Salford last night for the Proms In The Park, courtesy of our musical maestro friend, Glen. We packed up our picnic and headed back to the city where my roots are found. This year we went with Jon and Sam, who had been with us before when the proms were held in Heaton Park. On that occasion we had been surrounded by our children, but they all now consider themselves too cool for this event. I always really enjoy this evening but this year surpassed them all because this year the special guest was...
Chris De Burgh! Back in the summer of '96, Peter took me to his him in concert at Castle Howard as an end of chemotherapy treat to look forward to. I think that was the last time that our music taste was shared. He moved with the times and I remain stuck in a time warp somewhere between 1979 and 1996. I tried to explain to him that for me, this was the equivalent of him being at a Muse gig. And see Glen smirking as he accompanies Chris singing Lady in Red. I wonder if he was envisaging his daughter Becky, who can't listen to that song without wrapping herself in a red tablecloth and dancing?
And as if that wasn't enough, the orchestra and the tenor, Jon Christos and soprana, Juliet Pochin, did a Mamma Mia medley. I told Sam I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. It was fantabulous. When I told Anni, she said that she was really glad she wasn't there because I probably would have been dancing. "Yep," I assured her, "And waving my union jack." She shook her head in despair. Now if only I could have talked Juliet into lending me that outfit for the Abba tribute band night I'm going to in December....
