Happy Birthday Blogspot

Happy first birthday dear Blogspot.
To celebrate I am going to teach those of you who don't yet know how to use the apostrophe..
  • to denote possession e.g. My best friend's birthday. My parents' home.
  • to indicate a missing letter e.g. don't (for do not) isn't (for is not)

I shall resist the tempation to produce a set of online practice sentences.

The other common grammatical error which really annoys me is the misuse of "You and I" as in "He did this for you and I". Throughout our childhood, Mother and Teacher barked at us every time we said "Fred and me are going to the shop" and rightly so! What so many people forget is that sometimes it would actually be correct to say "You and me" as in "He gave the sweets to you and me" or "He did this for you and me". The key is to take away the other person and see what sounds right. You would never say "He did this for I", now would you?

I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home. I must stop being a teacher at home....

Reminds me of a joke-

Teacher: Johnny I want you to give me a sentence starting with "I"
Johnny: I is
Teacher: No - I *AM*
Johnny: I is....
Teacher: NOOOOO - I *am*
Johnny: I am the ninth letter of the alphabet
