We have been celebrating birthdays big and small this weekend. First of all, our youngest niece Amélie was one whole year old on Friday and so I went over for a little birthday tea.
Pierre had a ball repeatedly blowing out his sister's candles.
It is lovely to be able to enjoy time with my little nieces and nephews while our two are at the other end of the spectrum. As one of the advent activities in the advent calendar I made this year, we had to sit together as a family and watch Tom and Anni aged 6 and 4 respectively, in their school production of The Grumpy Sheep. Tom was the Grumpy Sheep and Annabel was an angel. It was hilarious and made me wonder how all these years have sped by. So it's good to still have little ones to cuddle.
At the other end of the scale, my Mum was 79 on Sunday. My delightful brother had told her that I was making her a snickers cake. (She loves snickers). So then I felt I had to make her one. Well I have to say it was by far the most complicated thing I have ever baked. There were 3 separate recipes for the cake, the filling and the frosting. It contained 8 snicker bars plus peanut butter, whipped cream and coconut so that you gained 3 stone just by looking at it.
After two hours slaving over this and Sunday lunch in the kitchen, my darling husband announced, "That looks awful!" Granted it was pretty ugly, but some things are just best left unsaid.
Anyway, the important thing was that Mum was delighted with it, even if she was the only one who had a piece. The rest was polished off after church that evening as I was on refreshments. Next year is her 80th. Peter and my brother will be baking the cake.
After a very busy weekend, I welcomed the silent shroud of snow on Sunday evening.
