A gripping read

Ione knows me well. "I have found the perfect book for you" she texted me a while back. I trust Ione's book choices implicitly so I went out and bought Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro and then somehow never found the time to read much and forgot about it. Having tried to relax with a couple of different light reads and never quite making it to the end of them, I came across this gem on my bookshelf and couldn't put it down. I was half way through it when Ione told me she had hated it! I can see why. Heart moving as billed above it may be, but the heart warming bit that I hoped against hope for never materialised.
As Ione lamented, Ishiguro, who also wrote The Remains Of The Day writes about people who simply accept their fate and in this case that fate is far from pleasant or acceptable. Nonetheless, the mark of a good book or film is that you think about it for a long time afterwards and this one certainly played on my mind. (I even found myself quizzing a Biology colleague not best known for his concise answers about which organs a human being could possibly live without.)  I cannot for the life of me understand why I enjoy reading such dark tales of dystopia but the fact is I do. Reading this book will definitely get you thinking and make you appreciate what you have.
I am looking forward to seeing what the film makers have done with it (released on February 11th I believe) and I will be watching it, still hoping against hope that they decided that the film-goer would like a happy ending.
