War stories

Well there has been a long delay in blogging more of my hols. Now I'm back in the saddle again. On one of the days, we visited Pegasus Bridge, liberated the night before D-Day.  We stopped for a coffee at the café Gondrée, the first house to be liberated by the Allied Forces, where we were served by Arlette Gondrée herself, daughter of the owners in 1944.
We also visited the German military cemetery at La Cambe; very different to the white crosses of the American cemetery, very dark and sombre. It was interesting to read some of the personal stories behind the dead soldiers, such as one man who had met his wife through Bible class at church. As he was drafted into the army and sent out to Normandy, she was expecting a baby. Instead of getting her husband back, they sent her his Bible and his glasses. He never got to meet his little girl.
Such a poignant visit!
