This lovely lady (16 years old in the photo above) celebrated her 78th birthday on Friday. My brother and sil Rob and Kath and my niece Lily came up north for the occasion. They lunched in a local Italian restaurant and then we had a birthday tea at our house for her. She seemed surprised by her birthday cake.
Mum hates being photographed so it is really hard to get a good one, but I'm posting this anyway because it is not often she gets to be together with even 3 of of 4 grandchildren at once.
The next day we ventured up to the even more frozen north to take Tom back to Edinburgh. We did consider putting him on a train but he protested that he had too much stuff to take back with him. Soooo glad we did take him! It was as though he had taken a waste paper basket and scattered the contents artfully across the room. We helped him to tidy and I reintroduced the vacuum cleaner to his carpet and rescued the laundry from the airing cupboard, which had been there since our last visit! We rearranged his room to a warmer advantage and stocked up his cupboards and fridge. We made him file his notes!
We had a lovely dinner at The World's End; haggis, neeps and tatties with whisky cream sauce if you please. Yum! On Sunday we went to Charlotte Chapel with him, which is always a delight, before a farewell lunch in his very favourite eaterie Olly Bongo's. We could tell he goes there often by the owner's hearty greeting of "Tom! The usual?"
I have to say I love Edinburgh and a big part of me could happily up sticks and move there. We were very impressed by Tom's friends too. He was warmly greeted with many hugs and then they turned and shook hands with us; very well brought up young people.
Although I miss him to bits, I am happy to know where he is and that he is loving it...and doing very well. One mark off a first for his end of term History essay! Big smiles all round.
